Grade 7 Lesson Plans

These exemplar lesson plans showcase best practices for English language arts. These lessons are aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards and bundle together multiple objectives to showcase the recursive nature of ELA. Each lesson plan includes helpful explanations about the instructional plan and steps. Teachers can review these sample lessons on their own, with a colleague, and/or with their professional learning community, to reflect on the highlighted ELA practices and how they mesh with their own current classroom practices.

Lesson plans are available for each grade featuring texts from the following genres:

  • Fiction
  • Nonfiction
  • Poetry

Moreover, an exemplar lesson plan sequence regarding Standard 6 research is available for each grade band.

The lesson plans are based on various texts that school districts may or may not include in their curriculum. Teachers should consider their district textbooks and curriculum before implementing any of these lessons in their classrooms. The main purpose of these lesson plans is for teachers to evaluate the structure and strategies present in the lesson and to reflect on their current practice. Teachers could potentially adapt a lesson with a text from their district curriculum.

Fiction

Nonfiction

"Rikki-Tikki-Tavi"

Students will read the short story “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” and fill out a plot map that includes the following: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Students will also use context clues to make inferences about unfamiliar vocabulary words in the story.

"Native Americans and U.S. Policy in the Late 1800s to Early 1900s"

Students read a nonfiction informative passage while listening to the audio. They demonstrate comprehension by summarizing the article in a brief paragraph that includes the main idea along with supporting fact-based details. The paragraph will include at least two sentence types as well as one vocabulary word from the passage.

Poetry Research

“Hope” Is the Thing with Feathers

The students will read the poem “‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers” written by Emily Dickinson. They will identify and interpret metaphors and their impact in the poem and define vocabulary words. They will write a brief personal narrative about a time they had “hope” in their life when going through a difficult time.

Researching Genetics

Students will read the nonfiction essay “Could Your Spit Solve a Crime” by Catherine O’Hagan, analyze primary/secondary sources, build vocabulary, and use it as a model for the type of genetics research paper they want to write.  Students will then conduct their own research and create a research question, thesis statement, and research paper. The goal of the twelve-day unit is to write a research paper using the appropriate writing style, including correctly citing sources.
