Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Students spell grade-level words correctly to edit writing.

  • Students use resources as needed to spell words correctly during editing.

  • Teachers use effective practices to teach students to spell words, such as using spelling patterns and not rote memorization.

  • Teachers demonstrate how to edit drafts to correct spelling errors. For example, provide sample drafts with misspellings and have students correct them.

  • Teachers model how to use resources such as sound walls, dictionaries, word lists, etc. to find correct spellings when needed.

  • Teachers provide opportunities for students to write and correct spellings during editing. See Recursive Writing Process.

  • Teachers monitor and provide feedback as students edit spelling mistakes.

Recommendations

Key Terms & Related Objectives

When students struggle with spelling words, teachers can…

  • follow a routine for identifying sounds-symbol correspondences such as…

    • count how many sounds in a word.

    • draw a line for each sound.

    • identify the letter or letter combination that is used for that sound.

    • slide finger under the word and blend sounds.

  • highlight spelling patterns in words.

  • have students find grade-level words and spelling patterns in various texts.

  • play games with words to provide extra exposure. Teachers need to provide explicit instruction on words before students use words independently.

When students struggle with editing, teachers can…

  • model editing writing to correct spelling errors.

  • place words on a sound wall and refer to them to assist with spelling. Sound walls organize words by sounds and not the initial letter.

  • have students look for specific words to make sure they are spelled correctly. For example, the words in a current spelling list, word bank, topic of study, etc.

  • Encode: to use letter-sound knowledge to write by applying phonics, spelling patterns, and structural analysis skills.
