Key Terms & Related Objectives

When students struggle with knowing what needs to be added to the text, teachers can…

  • ask students to read their text aloud and ask students guiding questions (e.g., “Can you tell me more about this character?”).

  • have students share their writing with others in the class. Ask the other students what else they would like to know or learn about the writing and have the student add the information.

When students struggle with knowing what needs to be deleted from text, teachers can…

  • ask students to read their text aloud and ask students guiding questions (e.g., “Do you hear any words being used more than others?”, “Is there anything that is difficult to understand?”).

  • help students determine if everything in their writing is related to the topic or story.  If not, the text may need to be deleted.

When students struggle with knowing what needs to be moved, teachers can…

  • ask students to read their text aloud and ask students guiding questions (e.g., “Does this sentence fit better before or after this sentence?”)

  • have students share their writing with others in the class. Ask the other students if there is a portion of writing that could be moved to help the reader better understand.

When students struggle with revising, teachers can…

  • remind them that writers reread work and move words around to clarify what they mean.

  • ask students to read writing aloud and determine if any words need to be rearranged.

  • Revise: the process of rearranging, adding, or removing paragraphs, sentences, and words.
