When students do not participate in discussions, teachers can…

  • provide sentence frames such as “I like this part because…”, “I agree with ____ because…”, “I wrote about…”,  “My favorite/least favorite part is…”

  • practice discussion skills by having a 30-second conversation each day with students until they participate in discussion.

  • start with structured discussion in smaller groups and then expand to discussion in larger groups.

  • provide time for students to discuss with adults or peers that they are more comfortable with and then move to other adults and peers.

 

When students do not know what to discuss, teachers can…

  • provide topics or texts that have been presented in class.

  • encourage students to discuss their favorite activities from outside the school setting.

  • refer to posters, illustrations, writing, books, etc. that have been discussed in class.

  • Collaborative Discussions: discussions that provide opportunities for speakers and listeners to use dialogue and interaction to raise issues, explore ideas, make claims, and discover differences.
