Standard 7: Multimodal Literacy

Students will acquire, refine, and share knowledge through a variety of written, oral, visual, digital, non-verbal, and interactive texts. 

 

WRITING: Students will create multimodal texts to communicate knowledge and develop arguments.

Developing 
  • Brainstorm with students different ways to present information.
  • Provide multiple examples of how different technology and media are used to create presentations that appeal to diverse audiences.
  • Display multiple interpretations (audio, visual, interactive, etc.) of a text or research topic.
  • Display examples of multimodal presentations (YouTube videos, TED Talks, etc.) and discuss how the different techniques affected them (the audience).
  • Guide students in the process of creating a multimodal presentation based on something that they wrote or researched. 
Approaching

Deeper

Acquisition 

  • Instruct students to find, explain, and analyze presentations that interpret the same topic but use different techniques and convey different points of view. 
  • Instruct students to analyze a multimodal presentation evaluating the argument and how the message could be modified if techniques were altered.
  • Instruct students to create a presentation in which they support a text (theirs or given) with multimedia components; the presentations can include original or chosen content of various formats (video, graph, etc.).
  • Instruct students to reflect on their creation process that explains their choices.
