Standard 4: Vocabulary

Students will expand their working vocabularies to effectively communicate and understand texts.

 

WRITING: Students will apply knowledge of vocabularies to communicate by using descriptive, academic, and domain-appropriate abstract and concrete words in their writing.

Developing 
  • When possible, use concrete or pictorial examples to explain vocabulary to students. Talk about the example, pointing out details using the new vocabulary.
  • Ask students questions that will promote the use of the new vocabulary to answer.
Approaching 
  • Model using new vocabulary to expand complete sentences when speaking or writing about a topic.
  • Give students a target word to use in a sentence.
  • Use specific praise to encourage use of new vocabulary.
Understanding 
  • Review new vocabulary and encourage students to use vocabulary during discussions.
  • Use specific praise when new vocabulary is used properly to expand a complete sentence.

Deeper

Acquisition 

  • Create a class or student book using new vocabulary.
  • Allow students to dictate sentence using new vocabulary, then illustrate sentence.
  • Bind pages together, then read book to class.
  • If class book, put in class library for students to read independently or with a partner.
