- When possible, use concrete or pictorial examples to explain vocabulary to students. Talk about the example, pointing out details using the new vocabulary.
- Ask students questions that will promote the use of the new vocabulary to answer.

- Model using new vocabulary to expand complete sentences when speaking or writing about a topic.
- Give students a target word to use in a sentence.
- Use specific praise to encourage use of new vocabulary.

- Review new vocabulary and encourage students to use vocabulary during discussions.
- Use specific praise when new vocabulary is used properly to expand a complete sentence.

Deeper
Acquisition
|
- Create a class or student book using new vocabulary.
- Allow students to dictate sentence using new vocabulary, then illustrate sentence.
- Bind pages together, then read book to class.
- If class book, put in class library for students to read independently or with a partner.
