Standard 1: Speaking and Listening

Students will develop and apply effective communication skills through speaking and active listening.

 

WRITING: Students will develop and apply effective communication skills through speaking and active listening to create individual and group projects and presentations.

 Instructional Guidance 

Developing 
  • Ask questions to assist students as they share about interests or stories.

  • Move to more open-ended questions as the student progresses to begin passing responsibility for speaking to the student.

  • Some students may need to begin one-on-one with the teacher, then move to small groups to gain the courage to speak in larger class settings.

Approaching 
  • Support when students when describing interests and telling stories.

    • Do this by asking questions to prompt students for more details or information.

  • Move to more open-ended questions as the students progress to begin passing responsibility for speaking to the student.

Understanding 
  •  Students need time to describe interests and tell stories to their classmates.
  • With guidance and support, encourage them to tell who the characters are, what is happening, and where it is happening.

Deeper

Acquisition 

  •  Students will tell a made-up story to their classmates.
    • Students explain who the characters are, what is happening, and where it is happening.

  • Students may work in groups to act out the story for the class using props.

    • Props may be student constructed.
