 Instructional Guidance 

Developing  Review the graphic features that students have learned prior to third grade and introduce captions and legends. Give students informational books and ask them to locate and identify graphic features with post-it notes.  Discuss how graphic features can be used to find information on their topic of interest.
Approaching  Ask students to come up with questions over their topic of interest by using a KWL chart.  Have students take the questions from the “want to know” section and use graphic features found in various informational books as a resource to answer their questions.
Understanding  Have students partner together to discuss the relevance and reliability of the information found in various graphic features over their topic of interest. 

Deeper

Acquisition 

Have students extend their research on their topic of interest by using electronic sources/and or interviews.
