 Instructional Guidance

Developing

Students read the “Nine Things You Should Already Know about Plagiarism.” Students take notes using the Cornell Notes. http://lsc.cornell.edu/study-skills/cornell-note-taking-system/

http://integrity.ou.edu/files/nine_things_you_should_know.pdf

Students discuss their ideas in small group or whole group discussions.

Approaching  Go over research vocabulary using Four-corners or Tweet, Pair, and Share.  Students can use Cornell notes during this activity. Model how to write research questions using question stems, and then model how to write a thesis statement. Focus on what the topic is and what they are going to do with the topic.
Understanding

Set up stations around the room where they have to sequence the source information, practice summarizing, citing, and paraphrasing, create their own research questions and make a thesis statement. They can take notes as they go through the stations, and then discuss in a whole group setting the information that they learned.

Deeper

Acquisition

Students write research questions, find sources, write a thesis statement, and create notecards and source cards for their sources. The topic goes at the top of the note card, and match the notes and the sources by numbering the cards. Source cards contain the source information, and the note cards contain the information from the sources: summaries, paraphrases, or citations.
