Standard 2: Reading Foundations

Students will develop foundational skills for future reading success by working with sounds, letters, and text.

 

PRINT CONCEPTS: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the organization and basic features of print, including book handling skills and the understanding that printed materials provide information and tell stories.

 Instructional Guidance 

Developing  Students will write letters correctly using writing utensils during writing activities.  Provide opportunities for noticing the spacing of letters, words and sentences and the left-to-right and top-to-bottom progression of teacher and student writing. Students will work on self and peer editing during writing activities to check for appropriate spacing for letters, words, and sentences.
Approaching  Through Cursive Handwriting instruction, demonstrate the correct formation of letters and allow students to practice writing letters in isolation as well as in words, phrases, and sentences. Students should use not only writing utensils (pencils, pens, etc) but also other modes of visualization such as air writing and different types of manipulatives if needed. Sites such as Kidzone and The OT Toolbox have free resources for handwriting instruction.
Understanding  Students will write all cursive letters using writing utensils during writing activities.  Provide opportunities for noticing the spacing of letters, words, and sentences in teacher and student writing. Students will work on peer editing during writing activities to check for appropriate spacing for letters, words, and sentences.
