 Instructional Guidance

Developing  Discuss with students reasons for choosing particular books (i.e. learning about a topic, reading a mystery, reading something funny).  Provide students opportunities to independently select texts and share the reasons for their choice.  Use book talks and read alouds to introduce texts that may be new to students.  If available, allow students to visit with the school librarian to find more titles of interest.  Help students practice building stamina for extended reading, by discussing reading behaviors, incrementally increasing the amount of time that students are reading, setting goals for stamina and charting success.  Provide time during the school day for students to read independently and for their own purpose.
