 Instructional Guidance

Developing  Discuss what makes a question viable for research (is it open-ended without being too broad or too narrow?). Have students brainstorm questions they could ask about a topic. Separate questions into levels and guide students to choose a higher- level question for their research. Model how to use a concept map or other organizer to determine what students need to know in order to answer their question. Have students choose the most important items from their concept map and model how to organize them into a thesis statement. Have students take notes from teacher-selected sources using a template or organizer.  Model how to use an outline to organize and properly cite the information to avoid plagiarism. Ask students to explain what makes those sources relevant and reliable and work together to determine validity.
Approaching  Have students create a concept map or other organizer to determine what they need to know in order to answer the question they asked. Have students choose the most important items from their concept map and model how to organize them into a thesis statement.  Have students choose from a variety of curated sources and take notes on their topic using a template or organizer, then organize those notes using an outline or another organizational strategy. Students should correctly cite each source to avoid plagiarism.  Ask students to explain what makes those sources relevant and reliable and work together to determine validity.
Understanding  Students should use the question they generated to create a thesis statement that will guide their research. They should choose a variety of print and digital sources from which to take notes and organize information.  Students explain what makes their sources reliable, relevant, and valid and can cite them correctly to avoid plagiarism.

Deeper

Acquisition

Have students organize their conclusions into a presentation (slideshow, Prezi, infographic, etc.)  that can be shared with multiple audiences to educate them about the student’s chosen topic.
