1st Grade Proficiency Levels

Standard 2: Reading Foundations

Students will develop foundational skills for future reading success by working with sounds, letters, and text.

PHONICS AND WORD STUDY: Students will decode and read words in context and isolation by applying phonics and word analysis skills.

Understanding

Objectives

Approaching

1.2.PWS.1

Students will decode phonetically regular words by using their knowledge of:

  • single consonants (e.g., c = /k/, c = /s/, s = /s/, s = /z/, x = /ks/, x = /z/)

  • consonant blends (e.g., bl, br, cr)

  • consonant digraphs and trigraphs (e.g., sh-, -tch)

  • vowel sounds:

    • long

    • short

  • r-controlled vowels (e.g., ar, er, ir or, ur)

  • vowel spelling patterns:

    • vowel digraphs (e.g., ea, oa, ee)

    • vowel-consonant-silent-e (e.g., lake)

*Once the student demonstrates an understanding of an objective, consider a deeper acquisition of those skills.

 Instructional Guidance

Developing  Use instructional routines, activities and games to practice decoding single syllable words with regular phonics patterns.
Approaching  Continue decoding instruction including the use of consonant blends, consonant digraphs, the silent e vowel pattern and most major syllable patterns.  Progressive Phonics is also a site that provides text with activities for phonics instruction. The printable books with Quick Start Guides can be sent home with students for families to support skills at home.
Understanding  Practice decoding regular words in isolation and in context.  Provide instruction in and activities and games for decoding words including those with long vowel patterns and r-controlled vowels.

Deeper

Acquisition

Provide opportunities for students to read connected, grade level texts and apply decoding skills in new texts.  As students demonstrate mastery with decoding multisyllabic words in grade level texts, they could move to higher levels, more complex texts.
