Summary vs. Paraphrasing (Website)
  • A research report mandates that students work through the research process for a final written product. A report can mean a traditional paper, but it could also be presented in a poster, pamphlet, presentation, etc.

  • While typical research papers involve supporting an opinion or a claim, reports, no matter how they are presented, must represent an objective summary of the most relevant information gathered according to teacher-directed guidelines.

  • Students will include the most relevant information from multiple sources to provide an objective synthesis.

    • Example: a literary review that summarizes how different books convey the same theme

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
