Supporting Resources

Teacher Insights

  • Arguments are claims backed by reasons that are supported by evidence.

  • Reasons provide support for claims, and evidence serves as support for the reasons offered and helps the audience accept the claim.

  • Transitional words and phrases can help students develop a logical flow between the opinion and the facts and details.

  • Using transitions helps writers add cohesion and connect one sentence to another and clarify the relationship between the claims, reasons and evidence provided.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
