Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Students will continue to create compositions with little or no mechanical errors that impact readability.
  • Teachers include explicit and implicit instruction on correct mechanics as needed.
  • Teachers provide students opportunities to complete formal and informal writing tasks.
  • Teachers monitor and provide opportunities for students to receive feedback that focuses specifically on mechanics.

Teacher Insights

  • Mechanics refers to standard conventions of English such as spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

  • Grammar refers to the rules of language.

  • Using model sentences to teach conventions can be effective, as opposed to teaching mechanics solely through correcting poor sentences.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
