Standard 6: Research

Students will engage in inquiry to acquire, refine, and share knowledge.

READING: Students will comprehend, evaluate, and synthesize resources to acquire and refine knowledge.

4.6.R.1 Students will use their own viable research questions to find information about a specific topic.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Students will ask questions.

  • Students will determine if a question is open-ended and researchable rather than closed-ended (i.e., “yes or no”) with guidance and support.

  • Students will develop questions that can be researched.

  • Students will use their questions to find information about a specific topic.

Teachers explain that viable research questions should be areas of interest for the writer and not too broad or too narrow to research.
  • Teachers model how to form viable questions on a topic.
  • Teachers provide opportunities for students to form viable questions on a topic.
  • Teachers monitor and provide opportunities for students to receive feedback regarding their research questions.
  • Teachers provide opportunities for students to use their questions to find information on the topic.
  • Teachers monitor and provide opportunities for students to receive feedback regarding their research product.

Supporting Resources

Teacher Insights

  • Teacher use questions that fit the topic, as well as questions that do not fit the topic. Helping student sort through appropriate questions will help them learn how to be able to discriminate. Using open-ended questions makes them more researchable.

  • Some possible guidelines to use when instructing students:

    • Is the question clear?

    • Is the question specific?

  • Does the student have an interest in the question?

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
