Teacher Insights
|
|
-
At this level, students are just recognizing pronouns and irregular possessive nouns; they are not required to independently identify them.
-
Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns.
-
A possessive noun indicates ownership between one thing and another.
-
To identify a possessive with a singular noun or a plural noun that does not end in s, an apostrophe and an s will be added to the end.
-
girl’s necklace
-
people’s thoughts
-
To identify a possessive with a plural noun that ends in s, look for words with just an apostrophe at the end. This includes plural nouns that end in ies.
-
boys’ shirts
-
parties’ balloons
-
Remember to place others before self.
-
Irregular nouns do not follow the basic rules of pluralization. To make them plural, their spelling must be changed instead of simply adding -s or -es.
-
Examples:
-
Plural nouns that end in ves: elves, calves, knives, etc.
-
Nouns made plural by changing vowels, changing the word, or adding a different ending: men, people, mice, teeth, etc.
-
Nouns that have the same spelling as their singular form: scissors, pants, bison, deer, sheep, etc.
-
Irregular possessive nouns are irregular plural nouns used to show possession.
-
knives’ prices
