Standard 2: Reading and Writing Process

Students will use a variety of recursive reading and writing processes.

WRITING: Students will develop and strengthen writing by engaging in a recursive process that includes prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
6.2.W.5 Students will use resources to find correct spellings of words (e.g., word wall, vocabulary notebook, print and electronic dictionaries, and spell-check).

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Students will use available resources to find correct spellings of words.
  • Students will utilize strategies to improve spelling and present the proper meaning of writing:
    • Strategy 1: see a word within a word.
    • Strategy 2: use sayings to help with tricky letters
    • Strategy 3: noticing how words are built with root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
    • Students will utilize strategies to improve spelling and present the proper meaning of writing.

  • Teachers identify resources available for students to find correct spellings (e.g. word wall, vocabulary notebook, print and electronic dictionaries, and spell check).

  • Teachers model how to appropriately use available resources.

  • Teachers provide opportunities for students to use available resources to find correct spellings.

Supporting Resources

Teacher Insights

  • Resources should be based not only on the availability of sources but on current available technology as well.

  • Students can use spell check in word processing programs like Word and Google Docs, but in online processors, there are add-ons available for thesaurus, grammar, and spelling problems.

  • Provide structure for students to record frequently used words.

  • A vocabulary notebook can be used to record words students find themselves looking up frequently.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
