Supporting Resources

Teacher Insights

  • This standard is for students to construct their own sentences. Students should be given opportunities to compose their own sentences with proper support and guidance. Students should be introduced to the 4 tenses with each (past, present, and future), but do not need to take that knowledge to mastery at this point. The goal is for them to use correct verb tense when composing sentences.

  • Verbs express an action or state of being.

  • Verb Tense is determined by when the action took place.

    • Past tense: I walked to work.

    • Present tense walk to work.

    • Future tenseI will walk to work.

    • Regular verbs form their different tenses according to an established pattern.

    • Irregular verbs don’t follow an established rule or pattern. Learning irregular verbs means memorization.

  • The 4 Past Tenses:

    • simple past tense: I went

    • past progressive: I was going

    • past perfect: I had gone

    • past perfect progressive: I had been going

  • The 4 Present Tenses:

    • simple present: I go

    • present progressive: I am going

    • present perfect: I have gone

    • present perfect progressive: I have been going

  • The 4 Future Tenses:

    • simple future: I will go

    • future progressive: I will be going

    • future perfect: I will have gone

    •  future perfect progressive: I will have been going

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
