What is a Noun? School House Rocks video
  • At this level, students are just recognizing nouns pronouns and irregular plural nouns; they are not required to independently identify them.

  • A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea.

  • Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns.

    • Pronouns are an important part of our language, and speech becomes awkward without them.

    • Types of pronouns

  • Irregular nouns do not follow the basic rules of pluralization. To make them plural, their spelling must be changed instead of simply adding -s or -es.

    • Examples:

      • Plural nouns that end in ves: elves, calves, knives, etc.

      • Nouns made plural by changing vowels, changing the word, or adding a different ending:  men, people, mice, teeth, etc.

      •  Nouns that have the same spelling as their singular form: scissors, pants, bison, deer, sheep, etc.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
