Standard 2: Reading and Writing Process

Students will use a variety of recursive reading and writing processes.

WRITING: Students will develop and strengthen writing by engaging in a recursive process that includes prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
2.2.W.1 Students will develop drafts by sequencing the action or details in a story or about a topic through writing sentences.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Students will order events or details from a text or topic in order to create writing drafts.

  • Teachers read aloud a text or passage.
  • Teachers model or lead the class in a shared writing experience to retell the story, paying close attention to the sequence of events.

  • Teachers provide opportunities for students to begin creating writing drafts by putting events or details in order.

  • Teachers monitor and provide opportunities for students to receive feedback while as students are writing drafts by putting events or details in order.

Sequencing Activities for 2nd Grade(website)
  • Story maps are visual representations to help students sequence events in a story.

  • Students can use drawings to plan, organize, and sequence their writing by creating a picture for each event. For example, beginning, middle, and end would have three pictures.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
