Students will apply knowledge of grammar and rhetorical style to reading and writing.

1.5.R.5 Students will recognize singular and plural nouns with correct verbs in simple sentences (e.g. He sits; we sit).

  • Teachers provide opportunities for students to demonstrate matching singular and plural nouns with correct verbs in a spoken sentence, read aloud, or text.

  • Teachers monitor and provide opportunities for students to receive feedback when matching singular and plural nouns with correct verbs in a spoken sentence, read aloud, or text.

  • Students must match plural nouns with plural verbs and singular nouns with singular verbs.

  • Students often learn that singular nouns do not end in “s” and plural nouns usually end in “s”. It is common for students to apply this to verbs. It is important to correct this misconception early.

  • Singular verbs end in “s” while plural verbs do not.

Examples:

  • Singular: The boy hops. He runs.

  • Plural: The boys hop. They run. 

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
