Standard 3: Critical Reading and Writing

Students will apply critical thinking skills to reading and writing.

 For more specific genre information, please refer to Genre Guidance (page 4 of the Support Documents.).

 

READING: Students will comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and respond to a variety of complex texts of all literary and informational genres from a variety of historical, cultural, ethnic, and global perspectives.

  • Who, what, where, when, and how questions are asked to determine if students have the foundational, or basic, comprehension of a story

    • Who are the characters in the story?

    • What was the problem in the story?

    • Where does the story take place?

    • When did the main character change her mind?

    • How was the problem solved?

  • In Pre-K and kindergarten, students were expected to master this standard objective with guidance and support. In first grade, students are expected to master this objective independently.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
