Teacher Insights

Reading Rockets:  Introduction to Spelling (website)

Reading Rockets:  Word Study Instruction (website)
  • Grade-appropriate, highly-decodable words are words that follow the spelling and syllable patterns that have been taught in first grade.

  • Common irregularly-spelled sight words are level one sight words (e.g., Dolch or Fry Word Lists) that have been taught in kindergarten and first grade.

  • Word Walls in a classroom will help students have quick access to grade level words.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
