With guidance and support:

  • Students recognize common formats of digital text (e.g. book apps, websites, and other formats).

Students at this level require guidance and support during instructional opportunities for this objective.

Teacher Insights

Defining Multimodal Literacy by Dr. Craig Hill (video)
  • At this level, students need proper guidance and support throughout lessons.

  • Children with print awareness understand that print has different functions depending on the context in which it appears — for example, menus list food choices, a book tells a story, a sign can announce a favorite restaurant or warn of danger.

  • Young children begin to associate print with familiar places and products in their home. This is known as environmental print and is useful in helping young children feel successful as a reader from the start. Providing books with pictures of these recognizable places and things builds confidence.

  • Students need many opportunities to recognize formats of print and digital text independently and with support.

  • Different types of print should be accessible to the students to look through and distinguish between words and illustrations.

  • Books, magazines, and other forms of print should be available for students to manipulate.

  • Digital resources and media include computer programs, digital videos, video games, web pages and websites, social media, databases, audio and e-books.

  • Digital media are contrasted with print media such as books, newspapers, magazines, pictures, film, and audiotape.

    • Different types of print should be accessible to the students to use as needed to find information.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
