Student Actions

Teacher Actions

With guidance and support:

  • Students will name and sort pictures of objects into categories based on common traits. .(e.g. things you eat, things you wear).

  • Students at this level require guidance and support during instructional opportunities for this objective. Teachers explain and discuss common attributes using same and different.
  • Teachers use think alouds to model sorting items by common attributes.
  • Teachers provide opportunities for students to work collaboratively discussing attributes and sorting items/pictures in a closed sort (attributes for sort given) with guidance and feedback as needed.
  • Teachers provide opportunities for students to work collaboratively discussing attributes and sorting items in an open sort (students decide sorting attributes) with guidance and support.

Concept Sorting (webpage)
  • Sorting is the act of separating things and putting them in a particular order.

  • An attribute is a characteristic that is ascribed to something. When students sort words, they are looking for words with similar characteristics and then grouping those words together.

  • The intent of this standard is that students can sort pictures of objects by commonalities such as color, concepts (food, sports), or other attributes.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
