Teacher Insights

Handwriting Development - Sizing, Spacing, Alignment & More(website)
  • Directionality in the English language is based on top to bottom, left to right orientation.

  • Calling attention to directionality when modeling writing or reading aloud can help students get a firm understanding of the concept.

  • Teach students to place a finger, crayon, popsicle stick, etc, between words to achieve proper spacing between words.

  • Young children should be encouraged to use invented spelling when spelling and conventions are not a factor, so they are comfortable taking risks with their writing.

  • Writing conferences with your students to point out good aspects of their handwriting, then focus on one thing to improve using positive language.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
