Instructional Guidance

Developing

Intentionally model correct book handling during read-alouds, ie correct position, right to left flow of reading, and treating books with care. Allow students to have short, monitored times to explore a variety texts. Sharing literature multiple times also allows students to make the talk to text connection. Make sure to allow repeated reading of texts with familiar and fun stories.

Approaching

Provide many opportunities for students to listen to read alouds and also have interactions with a variety of texts and genres. Encourage students to “read the pictures” as they share books with others.  A literature-rich environment encourages emergent readers to connect print to text and conversations.

Understanding

Provide and assist students in finding books that they will enjoy, such as books with a variety of interests, topics, and authors. Utilize the classroom library and center times for students to choose and explore books. Students will begin to identify their own preferences over time.

Deeper Acquisition

Allow students to have multiple opportunities to interact with texts of their choice, topics, and themes. Allow them to share their selections with confidence. Students may be reading pictures at this time.
