Instructional Guidance

 

Developing

Point out, explain, and discuss the meaning of environmental print, pictures, charts, and texts.  Introduce school helpers, explaining what that person does and how he or she can help students.  Talk about community helpers and how they contribute to the community.   

Approaching

Point out, explain, and discuss information provided by environmental print, pictures, charts, and texts. Teach students to look for information in environmental print, such as bathroom or exit signs.  Use think alouds to show how to use charts and pictures to find information.  Read nonfiction texts, then model how to tell something learned from text. Provide opportunities for students to tell what they learned.  Create charts using photos of people around the school, review what each person does.  Ask how he or she can help students.  Use charts and digital or print resources to learn about community helpers.

Understanding

Use charts, pictures, texts, and people for sources of information frequently in class, explaining the reason for choosing each resource.  Using a chart school helpers, let the students tell how each person contributes.  After brainstorming topics of interest, help students identify what resources could be used for information for their topics, then model using resources to find answers.  When introducing topics or themes, relay questions about that topic and possible resources for answers.  Identify how community helpers serve and help they contribute.  Provide opportunities to identify resources for different topics or tasks.  

Deeper Acquisition

Using chart of school helpers, give students scenarios or events and ask who would be the best person to ask for help.  Pose questions before reading a text, then look for answers together while reading text.  Let students ask their own questions about the topic and model using digital and text resources to find the answers.  Give students scenarios and ask which community helper should be called for assistance.  Provide opportunities for students ask questions, using people as resources, then report information back to class.
