Teacher Insights

  • Prepositions are words that describe time and spatial relationships. Prepositions are a key concept in PreK math. This is a good place to tie math and LA together.

  • There are many picture books that demonstrate prepositions and will help students understand these concepts. It is more important for students to have a good understanding of the concept than to identify them as prepositions.

  • The following are good books to use to teach and reinforce prepositions at this level.

    • “Rosie’s Walk” by Pat Hutchins

    • “Up & Down” by Britta Keckentrup

    • “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
