PK.5.R.3  Students will recognize words as actions (i.e., verbs) with guidance and support.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

With guidance and support:

  • Students will identify action words.

Students at this level require guidance and support during instructional opportunities for this objective.
  • Teachers explain action words.
  • Teachers model using action words.
  • Teachers provide opportunities for students to use action words in class discussions.
  • Teachers provide opportunities for students to act out action words.
  • Teachers monitor and provide opportunities for students to receive feedback when identifying action words.

Teacher Insights

Jack Hartmann:  Action Verbs video

Have Fun Teaching:  Verb Rap Song

  • Action verb - a verb that expresses physical or mental action of the subject.

  • At this age, remember to deal in concrete actions. Also, remember to start simple. Present tense verbs are easier for young students to start to identify. Action Verbs that can be acted out are a good way to support the students understanding of the concept, for example:

    • Joe walks to school.

    • The boys play basketball.

    • She is talking to me.

  • It is sometimes thought that younger students are not ready to learn the proper terms for the parts of speech. Young students do need to be exposed to the proper terms such as Action Verb.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
