PK.4.W.1 Students will begin to use new vocabulary to produce and expand complete sentences in shared language activities.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

Through shared language activities:
  • Students will begin to use new vocabulary to orally form complete sentences.
  • Students will begin to use new vocabulary to orally extend complete sentences.

  • Teachers explain that a complete sentence must have a subject and a second part that shows an action or condition.  Example:
    • Tom threw the ball.
    • Tom is happy.
  • Teachers give examples of complete sentences and ask:  who is the sentence about and what are they doing?
  • Teacher uses picture or photo prompts to help students build complete sentences collaboratively.
  • Teachers give students guidance and support when using new vocabulary to verbally form complete sentences.
  • Teachers provide sentence frames to help students form a complete sentence when applicable.  Example: I like to… My friend is…
  • Teachers provide opportunities to use new vocabulary in complete sentences.
  • Teachers monitor and provide opportunities for students to receive  feedback as students use new vocabulary in sentences.
  • Teachers model extending complete sentences.
  • Teachers provide collaborative opportunities for students to use new vocabulary to extend sentences with guidance and support.
  • Teachers monitor and provide opportunities for students to receive feedback as students extend sentences.

Teacher Insights

How do I Write? webpage
  • The intent of this standard is that students learn new academic vocabulary, content-specific vocabulary, and grade-level vocabulary and begin to use that new language and vocabulary in complete sentences.

  • Shared language activities include shared reading, shared writing, mini-lessons, read-alouds, etc.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
