Students at this level require guidance and support during instructional opportunities for this objective.

  • Teachers model using the appropriate language to explain what is happening in the pictures.
  • Teachers will provide opportunities for students to discuss illustrations and pictures.
  • Teachers monitor and provide opportunities for students to receive feedback as students are telling what is happening in a picture or illustration.

Teacher Insights

Picture of the Day (webpage)
  • The focus should be on the action within the illustration. This can include, but not limited to, the actions of the main character and secondary characters within the illustration, and how the setting contributes to the story.

  • The expectation is not independence. Students will still need teacher guidance and support.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
