Students at this level require guidance and support during instructional opportunities for this objective.

Teachers explain and model how to ask and answer questions during class discussions, while interacting with a text or different types of media.

Teachers provide opportunities for students to answer questions given by the teacher.
- Teachers provide opportunities for students to generate and answer questions about a topic.
- Teachers monitor and provide prompting. such as “who”, “what”, “why”, and support, such as answer stems“Yes, I do… or No, I don’t…”, while students are developing or answering questions.
- Teachers provide opportunities for students to receive feedback when asking and answering questions.

When students are using active listening skills consistently, they are ready to begin working on skills forming questions and providing answers about recent text, experiences, or topics.

Students should not be expected to ask and answer questions independently at all times. At this stage, proper guidance and support are provided to students through modeling and reinforcement of asking and answering techniques.

Due to recursive nature of the standards, it is essential that teachers are aware of how all objectives within and between strands work together for optimal instruction.
